What is Condylox?

Condylox (Podofilox) is an FDA approved topical gel that treats genital warts.

What causes genital warts?

Genital warts are side effects from a common sexual transmitted disease called Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is spread by skin-to-skin contact and affects more than 40 million Americans. There are approximately 100 different types of HPV. Thirty types are spread through sexual contact and have the ability to infect the genital tract. Out of those 30 only two types of HPVs actually produce the visible signs of genital warts. Other forms of HPV are high risk and have the potential to develop into forms of cancer.

How common are genital warts?

Doctors diagnose more than 1 million new cases of genital warts in the United States each year.

Is there any way to protect myself and/or others from getting genital warts?

Genital warts are extremely contagious. Approximately two thirds of all people will be infected when they come in contact. The only way to protect yourself and others from contracting genital warts is to avoid contact. Latex condemns provide some protection, but are not 100 percent full proof.

How do I use Condylox?

Make sure the affected area is dry before applying Condylox. Take a Q-Tip and apply small amount to the area. Do not exceed .5 grams in one day.

What if I miss a dose?

Do not take double doses. If you miss a dose, wait till the next one.

How often do I use Condylox?

Normally you should take Condylox twice a day in 3-day cycles. Once a 3-day cycle is finished, wait 4 days to begin another. If genital warts do not clear within 4 weeks, consult with your doctor about continuing treatment.

Does Condylox cure genital warts completely?

No. Condylox is a treatment for genital warts and is not considered a cure. Condylox does not lessen the chance of infecting others. Therefore, take precautions when engaging in sexual activity, even if there are no visible lesions.

Are there any side effects?

Frequent side effects associated with Condylox include local skin reactions such as burning, redness, flaking, swelling, itching, and erosion. These side effects are generally common and do not mandate discontinuance of treatment.

Who shouldn't take Condylox?

Condylox has not been approved for people 18 and under. The safety in patients under 18 has not been established.

In addition, women who are pregnant or nursing should never take Condylox. Condylox is a topical gel and can absorb through the skin. Certain ingredients in Condylox may cause birth defects in babies.

What can happen if I take too much Condylox?

If you take too much Condylox, you may experience moderate to severe symptoms including: abnormally fast breathing, blood in urine, mood swings, diarrhea, fever, kidney failure, fatigue, nausea, respiratory failure, seizures and vomiting.

If you happen to apply too much Condylox gel to your skin, wash the area thoroughly with water and call your doctor.

Are there any precautions I should be made aware of before I start using Condylox?

Use Condylox on EXTERNAL GENITAL WARTS ONLY. The FDA has not approved Condylox for treatment of internal genital/anal disease such as intra vaginal, cervical, rectal, urethral, or intra anal HPV.

DO NOT use Condylox gel with other topical treatments. Uncircumcised males who apply Condylox Gel under the foreskin should retract and wash the dry area daily. Failure to do so can lead to scarring of the foreskin, which may require circumcision.

If you have HIV, do not use Condylox unless you are under direct supervision of a doctor.
